Artist Bio

Sonya (she/they) is a white bodied cis neurodivergent fat queer irish/germanic settler woman living on the stolen lands of the lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples on the south tip of what is colonially known as vancouver island. They are a solo mom to two teens, 2 dogs, a cat and soon, a bunny! They have spent close to 25 years working in healthcare where they came to understand the relationships between self and systems, power and place, privilege and complicity, and the journey of unlearning dominance. In these explorations they have found disruption, humility, transformations and ultimately a sense of rehumanization - there are other ways to be! Sonya's practice as an artist is grounded in the relationships between all living beings and is focused on the political act of becoming within and informed by those relationships and accountabilities. Sonya is an art-as-process artist who seeks to explore the edges, and complexity of identity and lived experiences of self as part of systems. Personally, Sonya loves to laugh her head off, eat delicious snacks, swim in cold water, experiment with colors and textures, and sing songs in the round!
