Event Description | Graffiti Workshop for BIPOC Youth
Join the Function Festival and the East West Mural Fest for a fun spray paint workshop! In this workshop you’ll learn about different techniques for working with spray paint and create your own plywood art piece that will be displayed at the Function Festival on Saturday, August 20th.
Workshop participants will be invited to work with the muralist on a public urban art piece throughout the weekend in Vic West.
About the Function Festival & the BC Black History Awareness Society
Produced by the BC Black History Awareness Society and organized by Charity Williams, OLY, two-time Olympian athlete, the Function Festival is Victoria’s first BIPOC music and art festival. Charity is a Jamaican-Canadian activist, community leader, and advocate for greater diversity in the arts. She has supported numerous art initiatives in Victoria and works towards amplifying the voices of racialized artists.
The British Columbia Black History Awareness Society (BCBHAS) celebrates the achievements of Black people in British Columbia by creating an awareness of the history of Blacks in B.C., stimulating interest in the contributions of persons of African ancestry to B.C. and Canada today, and celebrating historical and contemporary achievements in the arts, education, government, sports, science etc.

No prior experience or skill level is required to participate in the workshop; participants are welcome to participate in ways that feel good to them
The workshop location is in a grassy, open park with some uneven ground and small hills
Participants will be required to stand while painting
Spray paint has an odour that may be overwhelming to those with sensory sensitivity
The nearest public washrooms are a 10-minute walk away
